Research Field:

Polymer Gels; Swelling Process; Heterogeneous Phase Model; Sorption Properties; Electrolyte Mixture;

Main Results of the Research:

  • The amount of absorbed water and low-molecular-weight electrolytes in the polymer gel phase based on a heterogeneous phase model of polymer gel structure was determined using a newly developed method.
  • The dependence of the swelling process on the nature and concentration of low-molecular-weight electrolytes was established for polymer gels based on various crosslinked polystyrene and divinylbenzene as well as polyvinyl alcohol.
  • For the first time, the efficiency of the process of separating strongly sorbed electrolyte solutions from an electrolyte mixture using a polymer-extraction method was theoretically determined.
  • The effectiveness of the separation process was shown to depend on the ion exchange resin’s nature and quantity, the distribution constant of water and low-molecular-weight electrolytes, the dimensions of the separation column, and the composition of the separated mixture.
