About the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature Founded in 1933, the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature at Samarkand State University has a rich and unique history. Initially, the department was led by the first literary scholars – Associate Professors P.P. Belov, P.V. Vilkoshevskiy, and L.N. Chernets, who laid the foundation for the field of literary studies. During World War II, the department was joined by new prominent scholars, including Professor B.V. Mixaylovskiy and literary critic S.A. Malakhov, which further contributed to the department's development. In 1944, the department was reorganized under the leadership of Professor R.K. Voysek, with scholars like L.N. Chernets, S.A. Malakhov, and L.A. Dombran joining its ranks. In 1947, the renowned literary scholar Ya.O. Zundelovich began working at the department, and in 1954, he took over as its head. Under his leadership, the department became one of the centers of scientific research, shaping the foundation of literary studies in Samarkand. Under the leadership of Professors Voysek and Zundelovich, the department defined its scientific direction, which was continued by their disciples V.G. Larsev, S.Ye. Shatalov, R.P. Shaginyan, Ye.P. Magazannik, E.B. Magazannik, and I.V. Tonisheva. In 1964, two new departments were formed from the Russian and Foreign Literature Department: the Department of Russian and Soviet Literature (led by Ya.O. Zundelovich, later by Associate Professor V.G. Larsev) and the Department of Literary Theory and Foreign Literature (led by Associate Professor R.P. Shaginyan). Over the years, department scholars have conducted research on topics such as the theory and history of romanticism, the development of genres in Russian and Soviet literature, literary translation, and intercultural literary relations. The scientific activities of scholars like G.F. Menshikov, V.N. Blagonravov, A.B. Gevorkyan, and many others enriched the department’s research and made significant contributions to the development of literary studies. In the 1990s, the department merged with other university divisions and continues to operate today under the name of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature. Currently, the department includes Professor Shahnoza Ishniyazova, Doctor of Philology (DSc) Mavlon Bobokhonov, Associate Professors Albina Abdullayeva, Mastura Egamova, Diana Kadimova, as well as senior lecturers and young researchers. Current research focuses on the historical-theoretical and comparative study of Russian and world literature. At the department, more than 20 master's students, one doctoral student, and five independent researchers are conducting scientific research. Scholars from foreign academic centers, including Professor Yu.V. Domanskiy from RDGU (Russia) and Honorary Professor A.S. Sherbak from Tambov State University, are involved in the educational process. |
