    Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Historical Sciences. Since 2006 he has been working as a senior lecturer and associate professor at the Department of Archaeology at Samarkand State University. Since 2022 he has been working as the Head of the Department of Archaeology at Samarkand State University.

In 2017 Odil Ergashev successfully defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Stone-working workshops of the Kokayoz Basin (technical-typological study)". He is the author of 1 monograph, 1 scientific treatise, 2 textbooks and 3 manuals. Odil Ergashev is the author of more than 40 scientific articles and has published more than 5 articles in Scopus, Web of Science and other prestigious international journals.

Kholmatov Normuhammad Urozovich

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor. He has been working at the Department of Archaeology at SamSU since 1983. In 1991 he successfully defended his PhD thesis on "Middle and Lower Zarafshan Neolithic" and in 2018 successfully defended his doctoral thesis on "Sazogon culture and its role in the Neolithic period of Uzbekistan".

During his career, Normukhammad Kholmatov published 5 monographs, 1 textbook, 9 teaching aids. The scientist has also published articles in 3 databases Scopus and Web of Science.

Avanesova Nona Armaisovna

Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Samarkand State University. She has been working at the Department of Archaeology at Samarkand State University since 1967.

Nona Avanesova has headed the Surkhandarya detachment of the university archaeological expedition for almost 25 years. She devoted all her scientific activity to the study of the Bronze Age of Central Asia and Uzbekistan. Nona Avanesova is a member of the editorial board of 1 international and national journals. During her career she has published 1 textbook, 5 textbooks, 4 monographs, 6 brochures and more than 100 scientific articles. Most of them were published in leading foreign scientific journals.

Berdikulov Mirolim Tugalvoevich

Umarov Ulugbek Abdujabborovich

Assistant of the Department of Archaeology at SamSU. Has been working at the department since 2011. Conducts scientific research on "The role of Stone Age ornaments in the spiritual and ideological life of communities in Central Asia". During his career Ulugbek Umarov published scientific articles in 1 foreign and 15 republican journals.

Karimov Rufat Uktamovich

He conducts scientific research on "Peculiarities of stone working techniques in the monuments of the Stone Age in the Zeravshan Oasis". Abdullo Bakhronov has published scientific articles and abstracts in 4 foreign and 7 national journals during his career.

About the Department of Archeology

 

Department of Archaeology of Samarkand State University was established in December, 1971 by the Decree № 448 of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the basis of the problem laboratory, which studies the city of Afrosiab from a historical and archaeological point of view. At the present time 18 professors and teachers work at the department.

Since 1944 the department is one of the scientific centers carrying out archeological and ethnographic research on the territory of our republic. The chair carries out field surveys, excavations of monuments, collection and research of ethnographic and ancient written sources. The department conducts scientific research on "Historical roots and cultural connections of primitive and ancient communities on the territory of Uzbekistan" under the main theme of "Early civilizations on the territory of Uzbekistan: material and spiritual culture. For some years the department has established contacts with leading scientific centers of foreign and neighboring countries. Established scientific cooperation with such research institutions as the Eurasian Division of the Institute of Archaeology of Germany, Lublin University of Poland, Ankara University of Turkey, universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Central Asian republics, National Center for Archaeology and Institute of History, held conferences, exchange of views and scientific consultations.

Professors and lecturers have prepared more than 300 monographs, textbooks and teaching aids, educational and electronic textbooks.

The Department has an archaeological museum and laboratory. This museum was founded in 1963 by D.N. Lev on the basis of the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of History. The fund of the museum contains more than 60,000 valuable finds of historical, scientific and artistic value from the middle Paleolithic period (90-70 thousand years B.C.) up to the 13th century A.D.

At present the department carries out scientific research work on "Early civilizations on the territory of Uzbekistan: material and spiritual culture".

Renowned scientists who graduated from the department:

Professor M. Jurakulov (1932-2020), head of the Department of Archaeology and one of the founders of the Samarkand archaeological school.  Holder of the honorary title "Honored Mentor of the Youth of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Professor D. N. Lev (1905-1969) was the founder of the archeological expedition of Samarkand State University.

Professor N.A. Avanesova - an outstanding teacher of national education of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
