Cotton varieties from China are grown in Samarkand...
A delegation led by Alifu Aershi, Vice President of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences of China, visited Samarkand State University.
The delegation met with Rustam Kholmurodov, Rector of Samarkand State University and a prominent scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, the main objectives and tasks of the Uzbekistan-China Center for Agricultural Crop Breeding and Seed Production, which will be established at Samarkand State University, were outlined.
In the first phase, it was agreed to test the growth and development of cotton varieties created in China in Samarkand’s conditions, as well as to assess their yield performance. Additionally, China’s advanced agro-technologies in cotton cultivation will be applied.
In subsequent phases, the plan is to begin work on developing high-yield, drought-resistant, disease-resistant, and salt-tolerant cotton and wheat varieties using modern genetic engineering methods. The establishment of a modern genetic engineering laboratory will be supported through financial assistance from both parties and international grants obtained in collaboration. Testing of Chinese cotton varieties in Samarkand's conditions is scheduled to begin in March-April 2025.
For information, scientists from Samarkand State University organized three scientific trips to the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University of China in June and September 2024. Cooperation agreements were signed with the scholars from these educational institutions on increasing the yield of cotton and wheat, as well as on developing new varieties adapted to extreme conditions.
