On February 15-16, 2023 Rector of Samarkand State University, scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan, member of the Senate of Oliy Majlis Rustam Halmuradov signed an agreement on long-term strategic cooperation with Professor Hiromtsu Nakajima, President of Tottori University. Prof. Hiromtsu Nakajima, President of Tottori University, Hatori Takashi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Uzbekistan, Mukhsinhoja Abdurakhmonov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Uzbekistan to Japan, Bito Yoshibumi, Head of JICA-Uzbekistan Office participated in the ZOOM platform.
The main objective of this representative office is to transfer, approve and widely implement in practice in Uzbekistan new innovative developments and knowledge developed by scientists of Tottori University on the development of agriculture in arid regions.
Representative office of Tottori University in SamSU will implement the developments aimed at effective utilization of arid regions, which occupy more than 50% of the territory of Uzbekistan, development of livestock farming in these areas, ensuring food security and thus improving the living standards of the population.
The International Center for Research on Arid Regions at Tottori University and its leading scientists are directly involved in the implementation of these tasks.
It should be noted that this international center is the only one in Japan recognized at the world level as a center for the effective use of arid regions based on science, in particular, the development of agriculture in saline and low-water regions.
Also this representative office plans to further expand mutual cooperation not only in the agrarian direction, but also in the field of engineering and information technologies, to transfer new knowledge in this direction to our country.
This prestigious representative office established at Samarkand State University not only develops cooperation between Tottori and Samarkand State Universities, but also provides an opportunity to establish interaction with other prestigious universities in Japan.
During the dialog, the participants expressed their opinions and suggestions on improving the activities of the representative office, and the main tasks were identified.
It was decided to conduct research on effective use of modern water-saving technologies, prevention of dust dusting, creation of new varieties resistant to drought and salinity on the basis of achievements of molecular genetics.
It is planned to train master and doctoral students in the field of agriculture, food safety and ecology. There will be an exchange with faculty and students.
Prof. Kristina Toderic has been appointed as the head of the agency.
For information, a modern greenhouse has been built at the Institute of Agro-biotechnology and Food Security of Samarkand State University in cooperation with Tottori University.
